How to Make Money in Music Publishing
How to make money in music publishing is a lot simpler than you think. One thing to consider is the fact that the term publish, simply means to make available to the public. So you can publish a song easily by posting it on your website, your blog, MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, and similar sites. In terms of radio publishing, you'll need to sign up for one performing rights organization such as BMI or ASCAP. I will briefly discuss three ways of publishing.
Internet Publishing
The very moment you make your music available for the public to hear on your web page, you've published the song. As simple as it sounds, the more you fill out copyright forms, music composer forms, and other of forms, they will all ask you if your music has been published yet. If you have made it available over the Internet, it has been published. One way to make this method profitable, is if you sign-up for websites like iTunes, Rhapsody, Myxer, and Soundstation. All of these websites will enable you to sell your music online.
Radio Publishing - BMI & ASCAP
You are only allowed to sign up for one of these websites and once you sign-up, what they will do is track your radio airplay and pay you for the amount of airtime it receives. Many radio stations will not even accept your music if you are not registered with one of the performing rights organizations. Both of these organizations have websites to go to register. Moreover, in order for these companies to pay you, your track has to be in consistent rotation because they will not pay you for a track that has only been played three times in three months.
Publishing to Record Shops
Distributing music to record shops is something I least enjoy because most of the time I can find fans that will promote my music for me more effectively. But if you're not old-fashioned like me, I would recommend you deal directly with the store owner and build a relationship with them to eliminate any middlemen.
These are just a few ways how to make money in music publishing that will benefit you once you take action.
Most people settle for a job and a boss after getting nowhere close to their music dreams, even knowing this information. Slow income, to no radio play, this doesn't have to be you & should have never been them.
